HP's Stanley Williams to discuss nanoscale computing at UCSC's Silicon Valley Center on October 25
Monday, October 15, 2007R. Stanley Williams, a senior fellow at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories and founding director of HP's Quantum Science Research group, will discuss nanoscale computing in a free public lecture on Thursday, October 25, hosted by UC Santa Cruz's Baskin School of Engineering and Silicon Valley Center. Williams's talk, titled "Computing at the nanoscale will employ different physics and logic operations," will take place at 4 p.m. in the World Room, Building 943, NASA Ames Research Center.

UCSC awarded $5 million grant for genome research
Tuesday, October 9, 2007The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) today announced a $5 million grant to the University of California, Santa Cruz, as part of a four-year project to build a "parts list" of biologically functional elements in the human genome. Under the grant, a team led by James Kent, associate research scientist at UCSC's Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering (CBSE), will establish a Data Coordination Center for the ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project.

VLDB 2007 Best Paper Awards
Wednesday, September 26, 2007Computer Science Assistant Professor Neoklis "Alkis" Polyzotis reported that a paper he coauthored with his students received the runner-up for best-paper award at the VLDB 2007 conference. Their paper, "Depth Estimation for Ranking Query Optimization," written by Karl Schnaitter, Joshua Spiegel, and Neoklis Polyzotis, was runner-up for best paper.

Prof. Jim Whitehead selected as one of four Distinguished Paper Award winners
Wednesday, September 5, 2007Associate Professor Jim Whitehead, reported that a joint paper, "Predicting Faults from Cached History" was selected as one of four Distinguished Paper Award winners at the recent International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2007). Silicon chip beams light through a liquid-core waveguide to detect one particle at a time

Tuesday, May 8, 2007The University of California, Santa Cruz, has appointed Phillip Berman, professor and chair of biomolecular engineering, to the Jack Baskin Endowed Chair in Biomolecular Engineering. Berman is the first faculty member to hold the endowed chair, established in 2003 with a gift of $500,000 from philanthropist Jack Baskin, a UCSC Foundation trustee and longtime supporter of the Baskin School of Engineering.

Engineer Dominik Rabus publishes book on optical devices
Wednesday, April 25, 2007Dominik Rabus, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has published a book entitled Integrated Ring Resonators (Springer, 2007). Rabus holds a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. His book, a new volume in the Springer Series in Optical Sciences, deals with a special form of optical device, called a ring resonator, which has emerged in the last few years in integrated optics.

Student Profile: Feeling the Heat
Tuesday, April 10, 2007David Munday and Matthew Minolli could have graduated last June with degrees in computer engineering. Instead, they got so wrapped up in their senior design project they decided to stay at UCSC for a fifth year as undergraduates so they could see the project through to completion. By the end of this year, they hope to have their wireless sensor network deployed in Yellowstone National Park by the scientists who track one of the worldâs largest active volcanic systems.
