The Wireless Video Research Project will implement a portable and robust wireless video system. This system is targeted for use in situations where a portable, robust system is needed without a need for extremely high video quality. Thus, the system will be designed with the following goals:
- Efficient algorithm of decoding/encoding video to enable usage of wireless communication with acceptable video quality
- Usage of low-power VLSI design techniques that will enable useful portable operation
The codec (encoder/decoder) for this project will be an adaptation of the ITU's H.263 standard for low bit-rate communication. The prototype models will run at QCIF resolution (176x144) and are targeted for up to 30 frames per second. These protoypes will run the codec algorithms on commercial DSP processor chips so that power and processing capabilities of the system can be investigated. Then the codec will be implemented in ASICs for the inclusion of low-power techniques with the selected DSP algorithm. Eventually the system will improve the wireless network of the model by including such enhancements as variable transmission power consumption (for varying channel conditions).
Additionally, this project is a collaborative activity that involves research work done at Korea University. They are working on improving the H.263 algorithms that will be used to implement the compression of video. The MC (Multimedia Compression) Team's web site at Korea University can be accessed here.
There are five student researchers, three students from Virginia Tech and two students from Korea University, Korea, are collaborating on this project. Director of the MC team of Korea University is Prof. Myongsoon Park.
