Software Development Tools

Software engineers do not need to have prior FPGA design experience to use the Nios Development Kit, Cyclone Edition. The kit includes world-class development tools and complete documentation as well as multiple reference designs and a step-by-step Nios Software Development Tutorial to get users up and running immediately. Users can write, compile, and run software on their Nios development boards within minutes of opening the box.

Altera has partnered with some of the most respected names in the industry to offer a complete embedded software design environment. Products from companies such as Red Hat, Accelerated Technology (Mentor Graphics), and First Silicon Solutions are included in this development kit. The development kit includes the following:

  • Compiler - Red Hat's GNUPro toolkit
  • Debugger - Red Hat's GDB/Insight debugger tool
  • Network protocols library (RTOS) - Support for raw Ethernet, address resolution protocol (ARP), Internet control message protocol (ICMP), user datagram protocol (UDP), and transmission control protocol (TCP)

Additional software development tools are offered by supporting third-party vendors.

Hardware Development Tools

This Nios development kit is a complete design environment for hardware engineers. Using world-class FPGA design tools, example projects, complete documentation, and a step-by-step tutorial, users will be creating their own custom embedded system within hours.

The Quartus II Design Software allows designers to process multi-million gate designs, streamline development flows, and decrease time-to-market. The Nios Development Kit, Cyclone Edition includes the Quartus II design software with a one-year non-perpetual license. Altera recommends that designers purchase a full Altera design software subscription.
