(Details)

Research in the MCS Division at Argonne National Laboratory is funded principally by the Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences Division, Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Our mission is to increase scientific productivity in the 21st century by providing intellectual and technical leadership in the computing sciences -- computer science, applied computational mathematics, and computational science.

Open Positions MCS and the UofChicago/Argonne National Laboratory Computation Institute have a variety of positions open for  predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, scientific programmers, graduate students, and undergraduates. Students should also check our Student Opportunities Web site.
What's New Registration for GlobusWORLD 2004 is now open. The 3-day conference (January 20-23, 2004) will feature parallel plenary sessions of Globus Toolkit and Grid-related content for attendees from both industry and science. For further information, see the Web site.

Two MCSers elected Fellows of AAAS. Rick Stevens, director of MCS, and Ian Foster, senior scientist, have been elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Each is being honored for his contributions to the advancement of high-performance computing. A certificate and rosette will be presented in Seattle to each new Fellow on Feb. 14, 2004.

NEOS team wins Beale-Orchard-Hays Prize. We are delighted to report that NEOS researchers have won the prestigious Beale-Orchard-Hays prize for their paper "Optimization on the NEOS Server." more

GADU is made the gateway to the Genomics Grid. The GADU (Genome Analysis and Database Update) system being developed at Argonne is the first genomics-based application to run on the U.S. Department of Energy's Science Grid.

Outstanding mentor. Gregor von Laszewski has been named recipient of an Outstanding Mentor 2002 award, given by the Office of Science (Undergraduate Research Programs).

Argonne's "Jazz" teraflop computer. The Jazz computer is being used by more than Argonne 100 researchers for studies in science and engineering.

ResearchFrom virtual reality to multimedia projects, from logical reasoning programs to Grand Challenge Applications -- these pages will introduce you to the many exciting research projects going on at MCS.
Resources Here you will find descriptions of and links to our various "laboratories" and research centers, including the Distributed Systems Laboratory, Futures Lab,  Laboratory for Advanced Numerical Software, Optimization Technology Center, and Regional Climate Center. For a history of computing at Argonne, see our Web site. For an overview of computational science activities, see our Web page.  For information about the Jazz computer, start with the Web site on the Laboratory Computing Resource Center.
Computing MCS has an outstanding computational environment that includes high-performance scientific workstations, massively parallel supercomputers, a scalable Linux cluster system, a multimedia laboratory, mass storage systems, and a scientific visualization laboratory. These Web pages are intended principally for MCS Division member. New users should start here for instructions about getting an account or for information on our software and machines. Here too you may find information about and answers to FAQs.
PeopleOur division has more than 60 staff members, supplemented each year by postdoctoral researchers, students, and visitors. This alphabetical listing will help you contact someone here quickly.
CollaborationThe key to many new discoveries in science and engineering is collaboration. Here you will find links to numerous joint projects we are working on and the people we are working with.
SoftwareWe are strongly committed to developing and diffusing our software into the user community. Here we provide a listing of our software products, together with information about documentation, new releases, and source files.
PublicationsOur primary "product" -- in addition to software -- is articles in journals, books, conference proceedings, and technical reports. For easy reference we have abstracted and archived (in postscript form) our publications of the past several years.
InformationThese pages include recent accomplishments, press announcements, and employment opportunities at Argonne and MCS. Also included here are directions and a map to help you if you are visiting MCS. Suggestions or comments on these pages are welcome.
