Project Epsilon - Working with Dynamic, Distributed Devices

October 21, 2004 - Today's internet is rapidly expanding from an internet of traditional networks of computers to a vast "internet of things." Cell phones and PDAs are already a familiar part of our personal and business networks - sensors and other very small devices will soon be added and made accessible over wireless connections. Estimates are that by the year 2012, the network could include up to 1 trillion of these tiny devices, characterized by their low-cost, low-power, and general small size. The Epsilon research project at Sun Microsystems Laboratories is focused on exploring how to configure, monitor, and manage these wireless device networks (WDNs), as well as developing new human-WDN interaction techniques.
